This Ph.D. contains a theoretical section which considers terminology and methodology in studying the South Indian dance-drama Yaksagana, laying special emphasis on the personal acquisition of performance knowledge. A descriptive section centres on various aspects of performing Yaksagana, and contains discussions of three different contemporary performances. A contextual section assesses Yaksagana's situation in the cultural life of coastal Karnataka. An appendix discusses various aspects of Yaksagana literature and their significance in sketching a history of this genre.
