Topics of Panels

In the panels virtually every topic important in the field of Asia studies has come to the fore. Zooming in on ICAS 5 themes ranged from 'Policital Implications of International Expositions and Art Festivals'; 'The City Elevator: Urban Dilemmas in Asia'; 'Scrutinizing Sources and Documentation': 'Education through the Ages'; 'Resources Management: Successes and Failures'; 'Colonialism and the Development of Nationalism': 'Causes and Cures in Health Care in Asia'; 'The World of Asian Diaspora, Socio-Economic and Cultural Assimilation during the Age of Globalization'; 'Authors meets Critics: Knowing Southeast Asian Subjects'; 'Crime and the State in South Asia'; 'Feminizing Religion? Exploring Women's Agency in Religion and Culture' to 'Exclusion or Inclusion: Improving Mutual Understanding of Development in Minority Regions'.

In all these panels a cross-disciplinary border transcending approach is stressed which enhances a fruitful dialogue among the participants who originate from more than 50 countries in Asia, Europe and America. This encounter between researchers coming from different cultural and paradigmatic backgrounds results in new insights in the way they will approach their topics in future research. At a personal level this leads to long-term academic friendships that stimulate a global approach to research on Asia.
