ICAS Book Prize

ICAS book prizeThe ICAS Book Prize (IBP) is a global competition which provides an international focus for publications on Asia while at the same time increasing their visibility worldwide. The book prizes are awarded for: (1) best study in the humanities; (2) best study in the social sciences. Furthermore there is a prize for the most outstanding PhD dissertation in the field of Asia Studies. Eighty publications (46 Humanities and 34 Social Sciences) and 10 PhD theses have been submitted, a rise of 50% compared to the 2005 edition. The reading committee was in particular impressed by the high quality of the PhD theses and calls upon the PhD supervisors to stimulate our young colleagues to submit their dissertations. The deadline for the IBP 2009 is 31 December 2008.

ICAS 5 Update Nr. 3: February 2007

The Selection Committee of ICAS 5 met in Kuala Lumpur in January 2007 to evaluate the organized and institutional panels. The Committee is most pleased to report that in total 100 organized panels and 40 institutional panels have been accepted. This brings the total amount of panels to 300 panels including the previously grouped panels of individual submissions. Thus ICAS 5 has the potential to become the largest Asia Studies Event in the world.

ICAS 5 Update Nr. 2: December 2006

The Selection Committee of ICAS 5 met in Kuala Lumpur in November 2006 to evaluate the individual abstracts and almost all of them have been placed in panels. This was done in line with the border and disciplinary transcending spirit of ICAS. The Committee is most pleased to report that more than 1000 submissions have been received. The wide variety of themes, disciplines and regions covered, as well as the participation from more than 50 countries and 400 institutes, promises an intellectually challenging Convention.

A provisional list of panels and its participants is now online at www.icas5kl.com . This list will be updated frequently with the remainder of abstracts which have not been panelized so far. Each panel has four presentations followed by discussion and will last for two hours.
All accepted individual paper presenters, will receive a letter of invitation by mail in the near future. The appointed chairs of the panels have been asked to contact the other panel members to construe a panel abstract by 1 March 2007.
Participants who have submitted an application for a ICAS 5 grant will be notified as soon as possible, but no later than 1 May 2007.
