- The ICAS Book Prize has been established by the International Convention of Asia Scholars in 2004. It aims to create an international focus for publications on Asia while increasing their worldwide visibility. The biennial ICAS Book Prize is awarded for outstanding English-language works in the field of Asia Studies, which must have a 2008/2009, or a 2010 copyright date. Reference works, anthologies, fiction, poetry, travel books, autobiographies, memoirs, pamphlets, textbooks and exhibition catalogues are not eligible.
- The ICAS Book Prizes (IBP) will be awarded for: (1) best study in the humanities; (2) best study in the social sciences. Furthermore there are prizes for the most outstanding unpublished PhD dissertations in the field of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The Prize consists of € 2500 for each of the winning books (in case of multi-authored work the Prize will be equally shared) while ICAS will facilitate the publication of the best PhD dissertation. In 2007 the Colleagues Choice was added, for which can be voted on the ICAS website.
- The ICAS Secretariat administers the IBP. It is responsible for the formation of a Reading Committee for IBP and one for the Best PhD. The Committees will, in the spirit of ICAS, ideally consist of representatives from Asia, Europe and the Americas. The ICAS Executive Secretary will act as secretary to the Reading Committees.
- The Reading Committees will adhere to jointly agreed points of departure in its decision making process. The decision of the Reading Committees is final.
- The IBP will be awarded at ICAS. The next prize will be awarded at ICAS 7 (30 March-3 April 2011, Honolulu, Hawaii, US).
- The ICAS Book Prize will only be awarded to authors who are willing to be present at the awards ceremony which is held during the opening ceremony of ICAS.
- The ICAS Secretariat must have received six copies of the nominated book for the best study in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences by 15 August 2010 and for the best PhD in the field of Asian Studies by 15 August 2010. All nominations should be submitted by the publishers through the electronic submission form at http://www.icassecretariat.org/node/add/content-publication. Please note: The submit page only becomes available after you registered and logged onto the site.
- Nominations for the best study in the humanities, the best study in the social sciences, and the Colleagues Choice Award must be submitted by publishers (university or trade publishers). Nominations of PhD dissertations can be submitted either by the young doctor or the supervisor of the PhD candidate. Also electronic books are eligible, provided that they are published by a publisher and that six printed copies are send to the ICAS secretariat.
- Do note that submitted books and dissertations will not be returned.
- A list of books received will be regularly updated at www.icassecretariat.org. The long lists will also be published in the IIAS Newsletter. Comments on the books and reviews of the books are welcome. These will be added to the entry of the book at www.icassecretariat.org
