Leiden – Berlin – Singapore – Shanghai – Kuala Lumpur - Daejeon
| ICAS 1 was organized by the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) and it was held in Leiden in 1998 (25-28 June). More than 350 universities, institutes, and organizations were represented. There were nearly 1,000 participants from 40 countries, 130 panels were held and there was a remarkably equal distribution continent-wise. New cooperative initiatives were developed. | |

ICAS 2 was hosted by the Freie Universitat Berlin and took place in 2001 (19-21 August). About 800 scholars attended around 100 panels and 500 papers were presented. During this convention the ICAS secretariat was founded. It was also decided to have future meetings of ICAS in Asia and make it a biennial meeting. |
| ICAS 3 was jointly hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore in 2003 (19-22 August). Over 1,000 scholars from 54 countries participated and some 940 papers were presented in 250 sessions, on a wide variety of topics. ICAS 3 also provided a platform for scholars to explore ways of coordinating Asia research in Asia. | |

ICAS 4 was hosted by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences in the Shanghai Exhibition Center in 2005 (20-24 August). It had slightly more participants and number of panels than ICAS 3. At the opening ceremony of ICAS 4 the ICAS Book Prizes (humanities, social sciences, best PhD) were awarded for the first time. |

ICAS 5 was hosted by the Institute of Occidental Studies (IKON) and the Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 2-5 August 2007. It took place in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center and was attended by some 1350 specialists which participated in some 330 panels in the field of Asia Studies. |

ICAS 6 was hosted jointly by Daejeon Metropolitan City and Chungnam National University from 6-9 August 2009 in the Daejeon Convention Center, in Daejeon, Korea. About 800 scholars attended 170 panels. The participants received two free copies of the ICAS Publications Series published by Amsterdam University Press of which eight volumes, based on contributions to ICAS 4 and 5, were simultaneously launched by its editors from every corner of the world. |
